IXON Unveils PhantomCure System, Unlocking New Era of Functional Foods
Through an introduction from the Chinese Manufacturing Association (CMA), IXON has partnered with the Guizhou government to tackle a unique agricultural challenge. The objective: apply our proprietary Advanced Sous-vide Aseptic Packaging (ASAP) technology to preserve Gastrodia elata (Tianma or Chinese orchid root)—a prized medicinal root renowned for its anti-hypertension, anti-diabetes, and neuroprotective properties.
Gastrodia is biologically unique. Lacking chlorophyll, it cannot undergo photosynthesis. Instead, it survives by forming an obligate symbiotic relationship with soil fungi in highly humid environments. While this localized ecosystem allows the root to grow underground, it leaves fresh Gastrodia exceptionally vulnerable to mildew, rot, and rapid spoilage post-harvest.
Historically, preserving the root for transport required rigorous dehydration, shrinking it into a hard, fibrous state that restricts its commercial applications to traditional teas and soups. Modern attempts to preserve the fresh root using conventional high-heat retort sterilization cause severe gelatinization. The intense heat also destroys the plant's delicate cellular structure, resulting in a soft, degraded product resembling a cooked sweet potato.
IXON has successfully engineered the world’s first ambient, shelf-stable fresh Gastrodia by deploying PhantomCure—a proprietary hurdle technology that reduces water activity using completely taste-neutral solutes—in combination with ASAP.
Unlike dehydrated or retorted alternatives, PhantomCure-preserved Gastrodia maintains a crisp, precise texture comparable to a Nashi pear. Crucially, the gentle sterilization process prevents the thermal degradation of the root’s active compounds, locking in its medicinal properties and yielding a premium, ready-to-eat functional ingredient for commercial distribution.
This successful pilot with the Guizhou government serves as the foundation for a broader market strategy. IXON will launch the shelf-stable Gastrodia under a soon-to-be-announced subsidiary dedicated exclusively to stabilizing premium Chinese medicinal goods, such as ginseng, Goji berries, and Angelica sinensis. By eliminating the necessity of cold chain logistics and destructive dehydration, this subsidiary will deliver unprecedented fresh-state preservation to the global functional food market.
